dwarfという単語はニュースサイトを読んでいると結構頻繁に遭遇します。
ニュースサイトでは名詞ではなく動詞のdwarfしか見ることはないでしょう。後述しますが、名詞のdwarfは童話の世界に登場するキャラクターを指します。また私はドラクエ世代なのでDWARFと聞くと「DWARFの洞窟」という言い回しが頭に浮かびます。ご存知の方はあのdwarfなんです。あとはDisneyですね。

動詞 (相対的に)〜を小さくする[小さく見せる]
名詞として使うと、「小人」の意味になり、日本では「ドワーフ」というカタカナ語で通じるようになっています。動詞としての意味は日本人にはなじみがないかもしれませんが、「小さくする」「小さく見せる、つまらなく見せる」という意味なんですね。
dwarfというと、Disney好きの方でなくとも、Disney映画 "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"（白雪姫と7人の小人）を連想される方も多いのではないでしょうか。この小人のイメージがそのまま動詞の意味に反映されるんです。
ですから、dwarf -->「小さくする」がパッと頭に出てこない場合は、dwarf --> ディズニーの小人 --> 「小さい」-->「小さくする」のように間に「小人」というフックを入れて最初は覚えるようにすると思い出しやすくなりますよ。
語源はドイツ語に由来しており、「小さい人間・生き物」を表す語からdwarfがきていると言われています。元は童話中心に使われていたものが、一般化して動詞としても使われるようになった。dwarfは通常のサイズと比較して小さいため、その「比較」の部分はしっかりとニュアンスとして反映されます。ですから、「比較」のコンテクストで登場することが多いのが特徴ですよ。

この例のようにbe dwarfed by「〜と比べると小さく見える」が定番の言い方です。

イギリスの大人気ロックシンガーRod Stewartさんの息子との2ショットを報じた記事。記事を見てもらえるとすっとイメージが入ってくると思います。
Rod Stewartさんといえば、日本では、Wham! Last ChristmasやSailingが有名ですね。もう77歳なんですね。ずいぶん小さく見えます。

発音は「ドワーフ」じゃない【w＋arの発音ルール】
「ドゥウォーフ」が正しい発音
dwarfはそのスペリングから発音が「ドワーフ」と勘違いされますし、カタカナ英語では「ドワーフ」で定着していますが、正しくは
/ドゥウォーフ dwɔːrf /
です。 これはwar「ウォー」、award「アウォード」と同じ原理です。warはStar Warsでイメージがはいりますね。
英語ではスペリングと発音には体系的な関連性があります。
例えば、ost の oは /オウ ou /がデフォルトです。host country「ホスト国」のhostは「ホウスト」なんですね。
wがついたarの発音は変わる
arというスペリングの場合、あくびをするくらいの口の大きさで「アー」と言って「R音」をつけます。これがデフォルトです。
art /アート ɑːrt /
ところが、w直後に母音が続くと、多くの場合、その母音の発音を変化させてしまうんです。これはwの発音が「唇を突き出してする音」というのが影響します。唇を突き出した後にあくびサイズの口を空けるのはかなり難しい。そこで、比較的空けやすいサイズの / オ ɔ /になる。cの反対に見える発音記号は「オ」といったイメージです。
なじみのない感じの語も結構知っている語が隠れている
dwarfが「小さくする」で登場すると一見気づかないですが、「小人」のDWARFだと分かれば、一気にこの単語のイメージがつかめますね。じっと眺めてみたり、(Macbookデフォルトの)辞書のORIGINをチェックしてみたりすると、覚えるためのフックが結構隠れていますよ。
